Stress, Trauma, and Cancer Oh My! 21st Century First Responder Health and Wellness

with First Responder Core Wellness, VSFA Chaplain Bill Elwell

We often say that the fire service is ever changing and steeped in tradition. The same can be said for any public safety discipline. One thing that has not changed is the most important resource any department or community has, personnel! It is the only renewable resource. People do not live forever, BUT, the knowledge, experience, and the heart of first responder can be passed on from one generation to the next. Our budgets often reflect the necessary high costs of equipment and maintenance that are required to do our job. Evidenced based studies have helped us realize the need for new equipment and methods. But what about the people that make it all work? Statistics reveal a need for change, national standards insist on the need to change, but what do we do next? We are given the privilege and responsibility to choose what habits we pass on to the next generation. During this four hour course we will look at evidence based strategies and tactics to better care for ourselves, our families, and the communities we serve.
